Alliance Roadshow – 2015

The Alliance Team had the pleasure of working two roadshows in Ontario, Canada the week of February 9th, 2015.  The first visit was conducted at a municipal golf course in Mississauga, ON which is outside Toronto.    Only 27 guests made it but we did have some snow that made driving treacherous.  Several people attended but did not check in. The attendees were enthusiastic and asked a lot of questions of our experts. Many of the attendees had used poly but had not received much education at all on the product or its use.  Fifteen of the 29 guests took advantage of the engineering presentation so our split groups were about the same size. We received several positive and enthusiastic comments about our content and presentations and we received several opportunities for follow up with the guests.

Sandales played an important role on Tuesday in Mississauga. They presented the fittings display to the full group, worked the crowd and helped load the truck.

The Tuesday event was held at the BraeBen golf course which is owned by the municipality of Mississauga, ON.  The course is built on a landfill that uses a lot of HDPE for methane recovery.  The methane is shipped off to a generation plant and provides enough energy to power 3500 homes and businesses in town.  Several of the people who attended knew poly because of its use in landfills and they wanted to see if it could be used for muni water and sewer.  Our hosts at the golf course were very accommodating with tables, chairs and set up.  Sandale’s team also helped with unloading of the truck so that was greatly appreciated by our team. We basically took over their clubhouse for 24 hours and turned it into a poly exhibition.  The food service was outstanding and the chef was delighted to prepare great food for our guests and crew.  Thanks to Claudio d’Andrea and his team for a great show!

The afternoon we finished the roadshow in Mississauga, we headed south to London, ON where Sandale’s Ed Fifield had rented space at the Four Point Sheraton London.  We had great support from our team as we tore down Mississauga, loaded the truck, drove south to London, then unloaded the truck and set up at the Sheraton all in a single afternoon.  A busy day to be sure and it was made easier with the help of our members!  We had perhaps the easiest unloading and loading process ever as we were able to pull our 26’ Penske right up to the back door of the ballroom.  Ah, life’s little pleasures….

Engineers questioned Chris Passmore from McElroy about butt fusion during the Mississauga show. Sandale recruited consulting engineers and senior municipal staff from the Toronto region for this show.

Importantly, we saw a much larger turnout in London despite constant flurries and snowy conditions.  The Alliance presented five modules each day.  The presentations were:

HDPE 101 Features and Benefits

HDPE 301 The Engineering View

HDPE 306 Accountability

HDPE 307 Fittings and Connections

HDPE 309 Pipe Bursting

At the Four Points, a larger crowd of forty guests met the skeleton Alliance crew with even more questions and an enthusiasm not often seen at roadshows. Many attendees arrived early and witnessed an early butt fusion demo.  We started the day off earlier than usual and delivered greater depth in our presentations as a result.  Several people approached me at lunch time to tell me how much they appreciated our presentations.  An early departure by one of our team led us to change up the usual order of our module slate.  The new line up may actually have worked better, so we may consider a similar structure in the future.

Ken Thielbar, (IPF Plasson) demonstrates 2” electrofusion to engineers and municipal staff in Mississauga on Tuesday. As both of our processors are in repair, Sandale shared one of theirs.

There is committed use of poly by several municipalities in the region.  So two or three have used it extensively and others have heard about it and have little experience.  While there were a lot of nodding heads while we were talking there were some folks who were being exposed to some ideas for the first time.  We should come back to London in the future with another roadshow.

Sandale did an excellent job with turnout.  Given recent change in Ontario law, solicitation was handled entirely by Sandale, although the Alliance did share its large list with the Sandale team.
